Every year since 1991, the Berliner Philharmoniker have marked their 1882 founding with special concerts at culturally important venues in different cities throughout Europe. The 1998 Europakonzert took place at Stockholm's Vasa Museum, under the baton of the orchestra's musical director of the time: Claudio Abbado.

Joined by world-renowned Swedish ensemble Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and the Swedish Radio Chamber Choir, they perform a programme including Richard Wagner's Overture to "The Flying Dutchman", Tchaikovsky's "The Storm", Claude Debussy's "Trois Nocturnes" and Giuseppe Verdi's "Quattro pezzi sacri"
