Program notes

Christian Thielemann and the Wiener Philharmoniker open the concert with the Overture of Weber's Oberon, or the Elf King's Oath. Then, the orchestra is joined by the pianist Yefim Bronfman in a performance of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2. The concert finishes with Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, the "Pathétique".

Founded in 1842, the Wiener Philharmoniker is one of the finest ensembles in the world. It is the only one with a democratic self-administration and many of the musicians play in the orchestra for the duration of their career.
