Program notes

The opening concert of this anniversary edition of the Verbier Festival live on medici.tv!

According to the tradition, the Verbier Festival Orchestra, one of the world's leading young orchestras, opens the festival under the baton of its music director Charles Dutoit. And this year, the new musicians start with Lera Auerbach's new work, In Praise of Peace, performed as a world premiere, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9!

Like an icon of the Verbier Festival spirit, this programme gathers a contemporary work (commissioned by the festival itself), and one of the Major pieces of the classical music repertoire. The young Russian composer Lera Auerbach is a regular of the Verbier Festival: many of her scores have already been performed there.

On the Beethoven Ninth Symphony's note, the Collegiate Choral and four reknowned solists (Lisa Milne, Lilli Paasikivi, Pavel Černoch and Matthew Rose) join forces with the orchestra. The tenor Joseph Demarest will sing Lera Auerbach's In Praise Of Peace.
