Program notes

Meet French pianist Jean-Paul Gasparian and Korean violinist Bomsori Kim on the occasion of the third concert of this year’s Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad. The event begins with Beethoven’s lilting and poetic Violin Sonata No. 5, which then makes way for the thunderous chords of Brahms’s Violin Sonata No. 3. The two virtuosos end the evening with an interpretation of Karol Szymanowski’s Nocturne and Tarantella. This work’s slow and deliberate opening section cedes to a contrasting second theme inspired by the devilishly rhythmic tarantellas of Southern Italy, creating a truly unique effect.
