Program notes

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe completes this season its performances of the complete Beethoven symphonies, under Bernard Haitink's baton. A fascinating and exciting experience, synthetizing two musical analyses.

On the one hand, the version of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), whose complete Beethoven symphonies recorded with Nikolaus Harnoncourt were acclaimed worldwide. The orchestra did not forget that brand new version they imagined, featuring only a few musicians. Their approach got the scores rid off many clichés.

On the other hand, Bernard Haitink, who has been the music director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam for over 20 years, and whose beethovenian renditions have always been renowned for their sense of construction, their rigorous classicism and their lyricism devoid of emphasis.

The encounter of these two "schools" could not create anything but a successful result. On March 5, watch live their performance of two symphonies by Beethoven: the first one, and the last one. The final choral for the Ninth Symphony will be performed by the Netherlands Radio Choir.
