Returning to the Verbier Festival after a 19-year hiatus, Sir Antonio Pappano leads the Verbier Festival Orchestra for one evening in a concert of works by Brahms and Strauss. He is joined by the great pianist Yefim Bronfman for the former's majestic Piano Concerto No. 2.
Premiered in Budapest in 1881, Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major was an immediate success: one of his greatest masterpieces, it has become a pillar of the piano repertoire. Strauss' symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben ("A Hero's Life") was the crowning gem of a decade of symphonic poems, after which he turned his creative efforts toward opera.
