The incomparable superstar pianist Yuja Wang joins forces with the world-renowned Wiener Philharmoniker and Colombian-Austrian maestro Andrés Orozco-Estrada for a program of turn-of-the-20th-century masterpieces by Rachmaninov and Dvořák.
Wang’s signature virtuosity is more than equal to the first work on the program, one of the most devilishly difficult piano concertos ever written: Rachmaninov’s 1909 Piano Concerto No. 3. Orozco-Estrada and the Wiener Philharmoniker then continue the evening with Dvořák’s timeless Ninth Symphony “From the New World,” which draws inspiration from Native American melodies and African-American spirituals. Premiered in 1893, the symphony was one of the first in the Western art music tradition to demonstrate the incredibly rich American musical fabric just waiting to be tapped into by native-born classical composers.
