Program notes

The first concert as part of Rodion Shchedrin's 85th birthday concert series includes a performance by Shchedrin himself! Under the direction of conductor and pianist Mikhail Pletnev, the evening features the talents of cellist Mischa Maisky, soprano Pelageya Kurennaya, and pianist Dmitry Shishkin, along with by the Russian National Orchestra and the Chamber Choir of the Moscow Conservatory led by Alexander Solovyev.

The great Russian composer and pianist Rodion Shchedrin turns 85 years old on December 16th, 2017, and in celebration, the Moscow Philharmonie and Mariinsky Theater host a grand series of concerts featuring all-Shchedrin programs. Mikhail Pletnev leads the Russian National Orchestra and Valery Gergiev leads the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, joined by some of the most accomplished Russian musicians in today's international classical music scene, including cellist Mischa Maisky, soprano Pelageya Kuriennaya, and International Tchaikovsky competition laureates Alexander Ramm (cello) and Sergey Redkin (piano), not to mention the great Rodion Shchedrin himself!
