Program notes

Prepare to be immersed in a magnificent Middle Eastern fairy tale with Andrey Petrov’s ballet One Thousand and One Nights, brilliantly performed by the Kremlin Ballet Company to music by Azerbaijani composer Fikret Amirov.

The story of Scheherazade has already been adapted by choreographers like Jean-Christophe Maillot and Alonzo King, but we never tire of rediscovering these legendary characters who transport us to magical worlds. Choreographer Andrey Petrov smartly mixes scenes of dancing and fighting, lively set pieces and tender moments between Scheherazade (played by the sublime Ekaterina Lekhina) and the King of Persia (the brilliant Mikhail Evgenov). The dancers’ twirling movements in Olga Polyanskaya’s splendid costumes transport us into a whirlwind of unceasing magic, mirroring the fables of Scheherazade…
