Program notes

The magnificent stage effects and dramatic choreography assured the popularity of Petipa’s Le Corsaire from the start! Originally choreographed by Joseph Mazilier with Petipa himself in the role of Conrad, the ballet is inspired by Lord Byron’s poem The Corsair. The literary work tells the love story of Conrad, a corsair, and Medora, a beautiful woman confined to a harem. Over his 60-year-long career, Petipa staged four productions of Le Corsaire. This production features an exceptional cast, with Altynai Asylmuratova as Medora, and Faroukh Ruzimatov as Ali, who give truly compelling performances.
