Gwyn Hughes Jones is from Llanbedrgoch in Wales. He made his professional operatic debut in 1995 with Welsh National Opera as Ismaele in Nabucco.
Roles for other British companies include Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly and Macduff in Macbeth for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Calaf in Turandot, Pinkerton and Rodolfo in La bohème for English National Opera. The tenor made his European debut as Ismaele with the Opéra national de Paris. Other appearances in Europe include the Opéra de Lyon, Brussels’ La Monnaie and the Norwegian National Opera.After his American operatic debut 1999 as Fenton in Falstaff for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Gwyn also appeared at the San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the Los Angeles Opera and the Washington National Opera.
This season’s operatic roles include Manrico in Il trovatore at the Metropolitan Opera, Rodolfo for English National Opera and Pinkerton for Welsh National Opera. With his contribution to NEUE STIMMEN 1995, “Che gelida manina” from La bohème, he won first prize.
