Program notes

A Dancer's Dream is what director/designer Doug Fitch calls an "über Fairy Tale," combining Stravinsky's disparate ballets The Fairy's Kiss and Petrushka to create a new narrative.

The creative team behind Le Grand Macabre and The Cunning Little Vixen (New York Magazine's No. 1 Classical Music Events of 2010 and 2011) returns, this time transforming Avery Fisher Hall into the icy Swiss Alps and a mysterious Russian carnival for A Dancer's Dream: Two Works by Stravinsky.

The New York Philharmonic brings Stravinsky's ballet scores to life, and Giants Are Small whimsically blends music with ballet, puppetry, video projection, circus, theater, and more to conjure a fantastical dream world where a passionate ballerina gets caught up in a blizzard, dodges jugglers, and spars with puppets. Get whisked away with us in this experience you won't soon forget.

This performance was broadcast on medici.tv for the first time on October 27 as part of the I ♥ New York Philharmonic Festival.
