Program notes

"World Music" travels to a Greek island which seems to be floating in mid-air, like its music and dances: Crete.

In the first part, Leonidas Antonopoulos meets with great musicians, who keep the traditions alive as well as those who dare to experiment with it, breathing new life into the sounds and the lyrics. He visits them in their homes and villages, he listens to them in concerts and festivals, in every place where the Cretan songs and dances reside today.

He interviews Lavredia Bernidakis, now in her nineties, the first woman ever to record Cretan songs. He meets the great Psarantonis, as well as his son, Psarogiorgis, the best lute player in Crete.

He attends wedding ceremonies in Anogeia and folk festivals in Kissamos and Lasithi. He interviews Mitsos Stavrakakis, the prominent lyre player.

He witnesses the original art of Dimitris Sgouros, Stelios Lainakis, Vangelis Vardakis and Stelios Petrakis and he meets with the musician from Ireland who changed the face of Cretan music, Ross Daily.
