Program notes

Daniel Barenboim, one the greatest performers of Wagner's works, relates his memories at the Bayreuth Festival.

Daniel Barenboim made his debut at Bayreuth in 1981 with a production of Tristan und Isolde directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. An outstanding production filled with fairy-tale like elements, this first success was followed six years later by a collaboration between Barenboim and Götz Friedrich for a production of Parsifal.

In 1988, Daniel Barenboim conducted the complete Ring des Nibelungen in a production directed by Harry Kupfer. This last production left an imperishable mark on the audience thanks to an outstanding synergy between the conductor, the director and the cast starring John Tomlinson, Anne Evans and Siegfried Jerusalem among others.

Daniel Barenboim appeared 161 times on the stage of the Bayreuther Festspielhaus between 1981 and 1999. This documentary directed by Christoph Engel gives the floor to Daniel Barenboim who relates his memories in Bayreuth, his first contacts with the Wagner family in the 1960's, and his frequent performances at the Bayreuth Festival.
