Program notes

Following his exploration of Prokofiev's oeuvre with the London Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev dives into the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra.

Just one short decade separates the Symphony No. 5 from its predecessor, and only 5 years later Tchaikovsky composed his final symphonic work, the Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique". His three last symphonies are considered a triptych unified by a common idea—man facing his destiny—and are adored by audiences the world over. It is no accident that these three symphonies are so frequently recorded and programmed. Deserving of more than just a quick listen, Tchaikovsky's first three symphonies carry the seeds of the composer's mature genius, a genius that elevated him to become one of the great Russian masters.
