Menahem Pressler, Salvatore Accardo, Antoine Tamestit, Gautier Capuçon play Schumann and Brahms Verbier Festival 2008

About

Salvatore Accardo, Antoine Tamestit, and Gautier Capuçon join the brilliant pianist Menahem Pressler for a concert of piano quartets by Schumann and Brahms.

Schumann and Brahms were tied to together by their love for Clara Wieck. To Brahms, Clara was a friend and mentor after the death of her husband Robert Schumann. The two Romantic composers also shared a musical hypersensitivity.

Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47 was one of the triumphal performances of the 15th Verbier Festival. According to Pressler, this intense quartet “without limits”, is one of the works that is most emblematic of Schumann’s personality: agited, tormented, and passionate. The Andante movement of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op. 60 closed the concert, a work Pressler describes as, “the most beautiful love declaration ever composed.”
