Schumann and Brahms were tied to together by their love for Clara Wieck. To Brahms, Clara was a friend and mentor after the death of her husband Robert Schumann. The two Romantic composers also shared their great musical sensitivity.
Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47 was one of the triumphal performances of the 15th Verbier Festival. According to Pressler, this intense quartet “without limits”, is one of the works that is most emblematic of Schumann’s personality: agited, tormented, and passionate. The Andante movement of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op. 60 closed the concert, a work Pressler describes as, “the most beautiful love declaration ever composed.”
