Program notes
Live from São Paulo, medici.tv broadcasts Beethoven's Ninth Symphony conducted by Marin Alsop.
While the world cup is in full swing in Brazil, medici.tv will shed light on the country's Major orchestra: the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP), under the baton of music director Marin Alsop.
Beethoven's federative Symphony No. 9 will be performed. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular scores of the repertoire, especially its last movement, Ode to joy, which was chosen over 40 years ago as the European Union's anthem.
The orchestra will perform along with two choirs: the Coro Acadêmico da Osesp and the Coro da Osesp. As far as the soloists are concerned, young soprano Lauren Snouffer will be present (a great lyric singing talent), with Brazilian singer Denise de Freitas, English tenor John Mark Ainsley (who made his name with baroque music performances), and Brazilian baritone Paulo Szot, of Polish origins, acclaimed both for his voice and acting talents.
Marin Alsop was named principal conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in 2012, and has been its musical director since July 2013. Today, it is the only woman to hold such a position among the Major orchestras in the world. In 2011, she was the only woman representing classical music to appear in the "Top 100 Women" ranking of the famous British newspaper The Guardian.
