Program notes

Daniil Trifonov and Myung-Whun Chung gather at the Philharmonie de Paris with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. They will perform Rachmaninov's intricate third piano concerto and Brahms's second symphony live on medici.tv.

Aged only 24, Daniil Trifonov, who was awarded first prizes of both the 2011 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, and the 2011 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv, and third prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2010. He is one of the most dazzling pianists of his generation. He impressed audiences in 2012 performing Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor alongside London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Charles Dutoit. For this third concerto which requires an extreme technical mastery and virtuosity, the young pianist gave a "high level performance, enhanced by an incredibly flexible and organic piano, that fluctuated between impassioned and more quiet and lyrical movements." (Le Temps).

For his first concert at the brand new Philharmonie de Paris, he performs alongside the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, which is considered one of the most remarkable European ensembles and which has been conducted by great names such as Pierre Boulez, Gustavo Dudamel, Alan Gilbert, Esa-Pekka Salonen and many others.

Daniil Trifonov plays under the baton of the acclaimed conductor Myung-Whun Chung for one of his last concerts as the Musical Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Chung has held this position from 2000, and will end his tenure during the summer 2015. He devotes these last concerts to works he especially likes. Thus, for the second part of this concert, the orchestra performs Johannes Brahms's Symphony No. 2 in D Major, which pastoral and cheery atmosphere reminds us of the place where he composed it - in the Austrian Alps.
