Program notes

The third and final part of the complete Robert Schumann's symphonies by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe – pianist Nicholas Angelich will be on medici.tv for the occasion!

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe will perform the complete Schumann symphonies at the Cité de la Musique, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Seguin. The young conductor from Quebec, a former student of Giulini and now the music director of the Philadelphia and Rotterdam orchestras, makes his debut on medici.tv!

"Soon, symphonies will be the only works by me to be published and listened to" Schumann wrote in a letter dated April 14 1839 to Heinrich Dorn, with whom he studied composition. He added: "I often want to crush my piano; it has become too narrow for my ideas. I admit I do not have much experience in writing for orchestras yet, but I think I will learn how to master it."

This concert will present the Genoveva Overture and the Symphony n°2, probably one of the most famous symphonies by the great Romantic composer. The guest soloist of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe will distinguish himself in Schumann's Piano concerto, the sublime and unique work for piano and orchestra which the composer completed!

This concert will be broadcast on www.citedelamusiquelive.tv and medici.tv. It will also be retransmitted on France Musique on December 6 2012 at 2 P.M.
