Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler

Wagner had a big influence on Mahler. Their orchestras were of gargantuan proportions, with many brass instruments, and they both liked silences and long-held melody tones, chromaticism... Mahler may have been born 50 years after Wagner, he contributed to his notoriety with Bruckner, by joining him against classicals. His symphonies, but also his numerous Lieder are jewels of post-romanticism, and modernism.
