Born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1987, prize-winning violist Ellen Nisbeth has studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and at Royal College of Music in London with professor Peter Herresthal. Ellen has participated in master classes with renowned violists such as: Lars Anders Tomter, Kim Kashkashian, Tabea Zimmermann, Maxim Rysanov and Lawrence Power.

As a soloist, Ellen has performed with leading orchestras such as the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. She has collaborated with conductors as Neeme Järvi, Daniel Blendulf and Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

In 2014 Ellen and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Daniel Blendulf) gave the world premiere of a viola concerto written to her by Britta Byström. The concerto will be available on CD (Daphne records) the fall 2014. Ellen has also recorded Tenebrae by Arne Nordheim which soon will appear on CD (Lawo records).

Ellen appears regularly at international festivals such as Bergen International Festival, Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Stavanger International Chamber Music Festival, Risør Chamber Music Festival and Vinterfest. Musicians she has played with include: Martin Fröst, Leif Ove Andsnes, Christian Ihle Hadland, Truls Mørk, Henning Kraggerud and Daniel Hope. Her recital programs are very in demand, and in 2013/14 she will be performing several recitals all over Sweden.

Nisbeth holds a teaching position at the Norwegian Academy of Music and regularly gives master classes.

She performs on a Dom Nicolo Amati viola from 1714.
