Yuri Temirkanov and Denis Matsuev in Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto and Brahms' Symphony No. 4
St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra
Annecy Classic Festival closing concert goes to Yuri Temirkanov and Denis Matsuev, artistic director of the event beside Pascal Escande. He plays Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, one of the best-known works of the piano and orchestra repertoire... Nevertheless, talking about Denis Matsuev's rendition of the masterpiece, Renaud Machart, journalist at Le Monde, wrote: "played like this, this concerto didn't sound like any other First Concerto by Tchaikovsky. Matsuev tells the true Russian story, not the story of the tears drown in vodka that some would call the real national feeling. It is the story of a contained and painful violence. The slow movement, dense, is said like a hymn of praise, a plainchant. Matsuev is amazing. But more than his bursts of octaves, it's his art, blending of accuracy, which impresses."
Yuri Temirkanov will the conduct Johannes Brahms' dramatic and passionate Symphony No. 4, epitome of his symphonic tetralogy started twenty years earlier.
