The Semperoper Dresden

The World of Opera – Opera Houses Around The World

Dresden was the first city in North of the Alps to have an opera. It has existed since 1667.

Today's opera house is known worldwide as the Semper Opera. Yet it was only given this name after its reconstruction in 1885, in memory of its designer, the most famous architect of the nineteenth century. In Dresden, opera is a necessity, declared the conductor Franz Konwitschny; it is part of the essence of this city. Averaging over 95 percent of capacity, seats sell at the Semper opera better than in other german opera houses. As a leading international opera house, it consistently attracts large numbers of music lovers.

In this programme, you will make a guided tour in the famous and gorgeous Semperoper Dresden. This film will also take you backstage in the opera house while a production of Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier is being set.
