Tamerlano, Haendel – Opera
Paul McCreesh, Graham Vick – Plácido Domingo (Bajazet), Jennifer Holloway (Irene), Sara Mingardo (Andronico) – Teatro Real Madrid
The great Domingo playing the role of Bajazet, for a memorable production of Tamerlano given at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
The Ottoman empire has fallen and the emperor, Bajazet (Plácido Domingo), has been captured by the tyrant Tamerlano (Monica Bacelli), whom he despises. The defeated Bajazet contemplates suicide, but love for his daughter Asteria (Ingela Bohlin) weakens his resolve. Andronico (Sara Mingardo), Prince of Greece and ally of Tamerlano, is in love with Asteria and she with him; so when Tamerlano gives him the newly conquered empire of Byzantium, Andronico asks only to remain at Tamerlano's side – really not wanting to leave Asteria...
It is often said that Tamerlano is not only one of Haendel's Major works, but also his darkest opera, which displays dramatically intense characters. Dominated by a Plácido Domingo at the top of his art, the cast also features some of the baroque scene's most impressive singers. The orchestra, playing on non-period instruments, is perfectly lead by Paul McCreesh.
Created in 2001 for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, this production directed for stage by Graham Vick had remained a reference since. Except for this revival at the Madrid Opera House, it has also been performed in Covent Garden.

In the press:Tamerlano’s four-hour length is buoyed by the vigour with which Paul McCreesh conducts the meaty, non-Baroque house orchestra of the Teatro Real...and the fluid, informally stylised dramatic treatment of the director Graham Vick.
Here Domingo puts some of his Baroque specialist colleagues to shame with the psychological penetration of his performance.
