Paul Agnew's Playlist
To mark the live webcast of Monteverdi's complete madrigals on medici.tv, we've asked tenor Paul Agnew to select his favorite medici.tv videos...
Ancient music is, with no surprise, key in his playlist, featuring major performers such as William Christie (musical director of the Arts Florissants of which he is a member), and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. His selection also features the wonderful and legendary Platée, directed for stage by Laurent Pelly, conducted by Marc Minkowski, in which Paul Agnew holds the title role at the Opéra national de Paris. The first seven Books of the Monteverdi Madrigals series performed by Les Arts Florissants are also highlighted. The project is led by Paul Agnew himself!
Such a selection also allows us to discover the wide scope covered by Paul Agnew's musical tastes: some of the greatest symphonic works of the nineteenth and twentieth century conducted by true maestros such as Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Claudio Abbado and Valery Gergiev. Paul Agnew also recommends you El Sistema, a documentary about the music education programme in Venezuala which has allowed many great musicians to make their name, such as Gustavo Dudamel, very famous musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Last but nos least, Paul Agnew could not omit Written on Skin, " the best opera ever written in the past 20 years " (Le Monde)
- Watch live Monteverdi's Madrigals, Book VII, under the baton of Paul Agnew, on medici.tv next Wednesday, May 28th.
