Multiples identities, Interviews with Daniel Barenboim
Interview with Daniel Barenboim

From 1999 to 2001, Paul Smaczny followed the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, a remarkable figure and a musician of many talents.

The figure of Daniel Barenboim, the director of the Staatskapelle Berlin, has so many facets that it is almost discouraging: a pianist, a conductor and a musical director, he also writes and takes a stand concerning the major issues of his time. During a tour of Berlin, Chicago, Weimar and Buenos-Aires (where he started his career fifty years earlier) which ends in Jerusalem (where he dares play Wagner), Barenboim reveals much about himself: from his birth in 1942 in Buenos Aires of Jewish parents emigrated from Russia until his arrival in Europe and subsequent move to Israel at the age of 10.

Cecilia Bartoli, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta and Waltraud Meier pay tribute to him as an exceptional musician. In a particularly moving sequence: we see a young Barenboim playing in a swimming pool with his wife, the cellist Jacqueline Dupré who died young. And the incredible images of the concert in Israel where he offered Wagner to the audience as an encore.
