Martha Argerich, Stephen Kovacevich, Mischa Maisky: Bach, Mozart and Grieg
Verbier Festival 2008
With each moment Martha Argerich reinvents ways to play the piano.
Seeing her perform alone on the piano is so rare that when she does and steps on stage, it causes a sensation. On this summer evening in 2008, the audience is transformed after hearing her performance of Bach’s Second partita. An intellectual miracle, magical sonorities, an incredible sense of risk: this is what comes to mind when seeing Martha Argerich. The one that has been nicknamed the “Lioness of piano” has lost nothing of her audacity, her spiritedness and her fiery temperament. The piano crepitates, the rhythms ignite with the capriccio and poetry becomes queen all along the Partita.
Known for her heightened sense of friendship, Martha Argerich has been playing for a long time alongside Stephen Kovacevitch or Mischa Maisky. By Kovacevitch’s side, with four hands or on two pianos, she rediscovers Mozart’s innocence and candor. With a secret understanding and sometimes gently mocking each other, both players are like children when playing Mozart. Micha Maisky’s intense lyrical bow brings out a more impetuous and authoritarian Martha Argerich.
