The real-fake story of Aida

Investigations on Verdi's opera

This documentary goes back on the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, which aimed at reviving the historical past and the myths surrounding the civilization of Ancient Egypt.

The history of Aida's premiere, reveals the historical, political and cultural context of the time. The work was comissioned by the Egyptian Khedive Ismael Pacha to celebrate the inauguration of the Cairo Opera house, which ornated the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The first performance of Aida was eventually given two years later due to Verdi's delay.

The opera, premiered on December 24, 1871 was an immediate success and is now considered as a major work in the Egyptian heritage. With the Egyptian setting given to Italian music, Aida evokes the passed splendors of the country discovered by Champollion, with its share of realism and fantasy.

This movie, taking place in Cairo, Giza and on the shore of the Suez Canal features inteviews with Abdalla Saad, stage director at the Opera of Cairo, Hassan Kany, Egyptian tenor, and other Egyptian cultural personalities from Egypt and Europe like Nicolas Joël, stage director at the Zurich Opera.
