La Roque d'Anthéron
The international piano festival of La Roque-d’Anthéron is exclusively dedicated to piano performances. During summertime, it welcomes over a hundred performances as it transforms the small Bouches-du-Rhone village of 5000 people into the “Mecca of piano”. The festival came to life in 1980 when René Martin approached the late Paul Onoratini owner of the village’s grand castle, Château de Florans, with a project to create a piano festival. In the middle of the parc surrounded by sycamores and redwoods, the clearing provides magnificent surroundings for piano performances.
After the creation of an acoustic conch in 1982, many arrangements have been made such as a rehearsal studio and bleachers to welcome the ever growing number of visitors. Thanks to the collaboration between art director and René Martin and president Paul Onoratini’s sons, the festival has developed along the lines of its original spirit: a simple infrastructure for welcoming the performers, great quality concerts, numerous faithful volunteers whose motivation help make this festival an artistic as a human adventure. In 2010, the festival produced over a hundred concerts gathering four hundred and fifty artists and 85,000 spectators.
