Although the illustrious career of her husband, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, overshadowed her for a while, Julia Varady, born in Roumania in 1941, led one of the greatest singing careers of her time. Further to her studies with Arta Florescu at the Bucarest Conservatoire, Juilia Varady made her debut at the Cluj Opera in 1962. Even though the vastness of her tessitura meant that she could immediately tackle the roles of the lyrical and dramatic soprano, mezzo-soprano and alto, her career was geographically confined by Ceausescu’s dictatorship.
However, she was engaged by Christoph Van Dohnanyi at the Frankfort Opera in 1968 and then settled at the Munich Opera where she sang a considerable range of roles from Vitellia, (The Clemency of Titus) to Lady Macbeth, (Macbeth), from Santuzza (Cavalleria Rusticana) to Violetta, (The Traviata) and certain Wagnerian roles like Santa, (The Flying Dutchman). Her career then extended to include the most prestigious stages of Berlin, London, Milan and New York.
Julia Varady decided to leave the stage in 1998 to concentrate henceforth on the art of the Lied continuing to pursue the faithful interpretation of the text through music. Much of her time is also taken up with teaching and Julia Varady has devoted herself to public master classes in Berlin, Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. Far from the turmoil of the media, Julia Varady deepens to perfection each of her roles, with a focal requirement of restoring the originality and totality of the score.
