Gilberto Gil, Culture as Homeland
Portrait of a committed musician

Portrait of a famous Brazilian composer and guitar player from the 60's, who became Minister of Culture under Lula (2003-2008). With an early career in Bossa Nova, African and North American influences later enhanced Gil's music.

He composed for artists such as Eu Vim Da Bahia or João Gilberto. He worked together with Yes, Pink Floyd, Incredible String Band and Jimmy Cliff.

With his interest for politics, Gil and the other Tropicalismo pioneers soon ran afoul of government authorities. Brazil had been under a military dictatorship since 1964 and the harsh new laws meant tough censorship guidelines for musical recordings and live performances, an got arrested in 1964.

One of his greatest hits is the 1979 Toda menina baiana.
