Crazy
A homemovie about our boys in war

Based on photos and amateur videos, UN soldiers give an account of their mission in a country ravaged by war.

Enlisted in the UN armed forces, these young Dutchmen left to protect civilian populations, to clear landmines and to disarm rival factions in a country at war. And they came home crazed by suffering. Crazy, this word constantly recurs in the witness accounts of the soldiers who talk about their missions in Cambodia, Korea, Lebanon, Yugoslavia, Zaire and Rwanda. Crazy, is the hunger, the fear, the mines, the massacres, the teenagers offered to soldiers by their own fathers.

Back in the Netherlands, all the emotions they had bottled up in action re-emerge: insomnia, nightmares and suicide attempts are the lot of these young veterans who deliver their sad stories before Heddy Honigmann’s sensitive camera.

And, as a leitmotiv, the same experience keeps cropping up: certain pieces of music they heard "over there" contain, as if in an invisible envelope, all their heavy secrets, all their bloodstained memories. So, far from the battlefields, back in their comfortable houses and cosy apartments, they cry while listening to music which, for always, will remind them of human folly. Crazy.
