Antoni Wit conducts Chopin – With Evgeny Kissin and Nikolai Demidenko
Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra
Nikolai Demidenko and Evgeny Kissin perform Chopin's piano concertos in Warsaw on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Frédéric Chopin.
Few composers have left in the classical music repertoire a legacy such important as Frédéric Chopin's one. His works for piano solo, including sonatas, mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, études, impromptus, scherzi and preludes have all been studied and performed by generations of piano students who discovered with them the idiosyncratic sensibility of the Romantic style and its iconic rubato. Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 21 – being historically the first to be composed in 1830 – and Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11 bear both witness of the influence exerted by the London School. Thanks to the impulse given by great musicians such as Clementi and Dussek, this school progressively transformed the classical idioms of the last century into the Romantic musical language used by Chopin and his contemporaries.
In 2010, the entire musical world paid tribute to the great Polish composer and pianist. Yet, one of the highlights of this season was undeniably the gala concert given in Warsaw on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Frédéric Chopin. Two of the greatest pianists, Nikolai Demidenko and Evgeny Kissin performed respectively Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11 and Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 21 next to the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of the Polish conductor Antoni Wit. The evening was a great success, and truly a gift for Chopin lovers all over the world.
